The Town of Weston, MA, is responsible for the maintenance of its stormwater infrastructure. As part of their efforts to assess, repair, and rehabilitate Town-owned culverts, the Town conducted a Town-wide culvert assessment in 2021.

As a result of this assessment, the Town determined the Sherburn Circle Culvert required replacement. Wright-Pierce, led by Project Manager Tom Hogan, provided design and permitting for the replacement of the cast-in-place culvert with large stone headwalls at the crossing of Sherburn Circle and Boggle Brook.

Analysis & Design

A hydrologic and hydraulic analysis was conducted to confirm the required size of the proposed structure. Based on the findings, a precast concrete box structure with large block pre-cast concrete headwalls was selected. The culvert was designed as a 34-foot-long, 8-foot-wide precast box culvert, with a height measuring between 4 and 8 feet. Additional design elements included new, precast, large-block retaining walls; new utilities within the limit of work; stormwater drainage improvements; and full-depth roadway reconstruction, curbing, and timber guardrails. Additional work included a series of wetland mitigation improvements and erosion and sediment control.

Regulatory Requirements

The new culvert was designed to meet the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Stream Crossing Guidelines to provide for fish passage, stream continuity, and wildlife passage. Wright-Pierce acquired the necessary regulatory approvals, including from the local inland wetlands agency and MassDEP per the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act.

Construction of the new culvert was completed in 2023. Aging transportation infrastructure is a challenge faced by many cities and towns. Please contact us to learn how we can assist your community with culvert design services.
