DRINKING WATER SERVICES
Iron & Manganese
Iron and manganese, two inorganic constituents commonly found in drinking water supplies, have traditionally been regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act through secondary drinking water standards for aesthetic reasons. However, individual states like Massachusetts have begun to regulate manganese due to health concerns.
Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) with secondary drinking water standards. The secondary maximum contaminant levels (SMCL) for iron and manganese are 0.3 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. Although concentrations in excess of the SMCL have been historically thought to pose no health risk, they do cause aesthetic problems. Colored water, high turbidity, staining of laundry and plumbing fixtures, undesirable taste, and occasionally odor problems are potential results of iron and manganese concentrations in excess of the SMCL. More recently however, states like Massachusetts have begun regulating manganese due to its health concerns. Consequently, many municipalities have sought effective solutions for iron and manganese control. There are several treatment processes available, and selection of a particular process should be based upon a firm understanding of the raw water quality. Wright-Pierce has the knowledge, capability, and experience to successfully implement an efficient and cost-effective iron and manganese treatment system. Our team has experience with greensand, GreensandPlus™, biological filtration, membrane filtration, and many proprietary medias for iron and manganese removal. Services provided include:
- Desktop treatability studies
- Water quality investigations
- Pilot studies
- Treatment system design and construction administration
- Funding source assistance for project implementation
